Follow Friday – Fake and Funny Twitter Accounts

Shortly after the internet became popular, parody sites and imposter email accounts became popular right along with it.

Twitter is no different. Celebrities, politicians, and businesses have been targeted by folks who obviously have free time on their hands to pose as someone else, usually with no ill-intent. Some of the targets actually love the attention and parodies, like William Shatner (who did ask for his “name” account and was granted by an imposter – who then grabbed WilliamShatner2).

Below are a few of my favorites. Check them out, and please leave some of your favorites in the comments section below, or send them to me @BeBizzy on Twitter! Read more »

Call Phones from Gmail

HC3O2w

Google has fired another shot at the telephone companies, and at fellow free VOIP provider, Skype, with it’s newest invention, the ability to call land and cell phones right from Gmail.

The feature should be active on all Gmail accounts as of 6/25/2010, and allow you to call friends, family and business contacts through your computer using the mic and speakers, or any specialized equipment you may use for voice communication.

Google, as usual, has provided an over-simplified video that explains the basic features.  More info can be found at the Gmail blog here. Read more »

Follow Friday – Engagers!

connecting

Time for another Follow Friday post.

I spend a fair amount of time on Twitter whether it’s Hootsuite at work, the Twitter home page, or on my Android phone. And one of the biggest thrills is interacting with folks around North Dakota, the US, and even around the world, that I have never actually met in person.

So today, I am listing a few people with which I interact often, and that I have never (knowingly) met in person.

Please follow them if you have an interest in technology, social media, or just want to be entertained with witty banter and information.

In addition, I would like to list several Tweeple who include me on their #FF list weekly. All great people/organizations that should be followed and engaged.

Using Twitter When Your Customers Don’t

twitter1_logo

Many small business owners, and even some large ones, are asking why they should join Twitter.

Well, if you live in a sparsely populated area like North Dakota, that’s a very good question.

There are many reasons beyond the doing-it-because-everyone-else-is factor, but in this presentation I will give you four solid reasons why your business, organization, or personal brand needs to be on Twitter, even if there is no direct marketing benefit. I plan on recording some audio over this presentation shortly, so stay tuned. But if you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact me via Twitter @Bebizzy, or via our contact page.

North Dakota Twitter Users… or lack thereof.

north-dakota-map

As I prepared to give another presentation to the monthly NDTweetup meeting in Bismarck last Thursday, I did some research on the state of Twitter in North Dakota. The NDTweetup meeting is a collection of marketers, business people, journalists and other folks with an interest in social media and networking. Currently the “club” is only meeting in Bismarck, but the hope is to get interest brewing in other areas of the state.

But North Dakota is taking a beating when you look at the stats.

RedWild Show on URL Radio

Today was a big day.  I’m not usually a media hound, but it seemed like I was everywhere today.

First, @KateSchell from KXMB News in Bismarck came to our monthly #NDTweetup meeting and conducted an interview with Scott Wild and myself.  She then hung around for my presentation on Why You Should Be On Twitter Even If Your Customers Aren’t (presentation coming soon).  That interview and the story should be shown on KXMB News on Monday or Tuesday of next week (Aug 16 or 17, 2010).

Later that day, I was asked to appear on the RedWild Show on URLRadio.net.  The show features Scott Wild ( @WildInspire ) and Brian Matthews ( @RedSneaker ) discussing a wealth of tech, social media, and general interest issues on an internet radio station whose home is right here in Bismarck, ND.

I talked about an experience I had in 2008 that got me hooked on Twitter and has led me to acquire one of the largest and most loyal followings in North Dakota.  Even though my throat was in pretty rough shape, I enjoyed the time on the show and look forward to talking with Brian and Scott again very soon. news-red

Do you still watch the the evening news?  I bet at least one of the people below hopes you do.  How about read the newspaper?

If you are reading this and are like more and more Americans, you are getting your news from so-called “alternative sources,” namely, the Internet.

I consume MOST of my news online, either through my Twitter feed (I have a Twitter List and @Hootsuite column dedicated to news sources), or just a lunch time or evening visit to my favorite local news site, sports website, or a variety of other blogs and sources.

But local media is starting to catch on to this whole Twitter fad.  Below is a list of some of the more active media personalities in North Dakota.  Follow them to stay informed of what’s happening around the state and region.

Also, take a moment to check out my Dakota’s twitter list.  It’s filling up fast with over 400 Twitter users from North and South Dakota.

Is Your Business PCI-DSS Compliant?

pci

PCC_DSS compliant?  Never heard of it?

Well, if you take any form of electronic payment from credit, debit, or corporate cards that are labeled by VISA or Master Card, you SHOULD know what PCI-DSS is.

In short, PCI-DSS is a standard that ensures that your customer’s private information is secure to attacks, or even simple mistakes, and will not leave the walls of the business (or in many cases, the servers on which the data is stored).

Terry Tate – Office Linebacker

terry_tate

A Twitter discussion (thanks @OarFan5!) had me reminiscing about the days where a certain number “56″ was increasing productivity… one hit at a time.

Terry Tate, office linebacker for Felcher & Sons, made sure horseplay and bad behavior were eliminated.

Unfortunately the Reebok ad campaign was cut short and disappeared without any real explanation.  Fortunately the internet has preserved this humorous take at office stupidity.

Augen’s $150 Android Tablet

augen_gentouch_781

I just learned of this little unit this morning, but you can bet I’ll be over at Kmart today checking to see if they have any.

A small company, Augen, has developed and marketed a 7″ Android Tablet with WiFi, 2GB of storage and 256MB of RAM.  Not huge by any means, but compared to $500+ for an iPad, it looks like a great deal to me!

Details are sketchy, but what we are able to gather the screen resolution is 800×480, it has an SDHC slot for additional storage, and has an 800mhz processor.

Know anyone who has one? You? Leave some comments below to let us know what you think! Me? I’m heading to Kmart at lunch to do a little exploring!

UPDATE : Not available in my local Kmart yet (Bismarck, ND).
